This post will contain spoilers about the next expansion’s name, as well as some of its features.
Approximately 20 minutes ago (19:00 GMT, August 10th, 2009), wow.com confirmed that the next expansion will be called Cataclysm, as many people thought (including myself) due to Blizzard’s registering of the now-trademarked word.
Not only that, but it has also been confirmed by ‘multiple sources’ (as professional journalists, the website will not release their sources, but I personally suspect either someone inside Blizzard or someone with access to their files) that Cataclysm will bring with it two new, playable races:
- For the Alliance, the Worgen
- For the Horde, the Goblins
Many people had put bets on these races but it hadn’t been confirmed until now. However, these are logical choices. Hints have been dropped, ranging from the occasional blue post about the Graymane Wall to the data-mined Hallow’s Eve masks with new textures for these races, and the races also fit well with the lore and story. I’ll talk more about this in a future post.
EDIT: Many commenters on the wow.com post (127 posters after 40 minutes) are calling this fake due to having not seen the sources – I for one believe wow.com to be correct as usual, and I suspect we’ll see confirmation from other sites (MMO-Champion, etc) before too long.
