The Weekly Warlock Wind-Up: When mathematics is broken (answer)

This week, I gave you this:

Imagine that 2 + 2 = 5. Starting with that, can you prove to me that 1 = 1 and that, at the same time, 1 = 42?

See the answer after the break!

Now, I’m going to be honest with you – technically there are infinitely many possible answers to this problem. These are two which work:

1 = 1

From 2 + 2 = 5, we can deduce that 4 = 5. Doubling both sides gives 8 = 10, and then subtracting 9 from both sides gives -1 = 1. Then, just square both sides to get 1 = 1.

1 = 42

Again we deduce that 4 = 5. This time we subtract 4 from both sides to get 0 = 1. Multiplying both sides by 41 gives 0 = 41, and then simply add one to both sides to give us 1 = 42.
